Let’s Face It – Your Dog Needs More Exercise
We all make New Year resolutions, and there’s no reason our dogs can’t do the same. If your dog is lazy, overweight, or otherwise lethargic then they can make a change too. The truth is though that they can’t do it alone, and they’re going to need your help if they are going to be more healthy this year.
Go For Walks Frequently
We all should be getting outside for some fresh air and a brisk walk regularly, and if you aren’t already taking your dog along for the journey then that’s a good place to start. If you’re an avid walker then 10,000 steps a day is a top-notch target, and it is a great goal for your dog too. In the spirit of habit formation, even five minutes a day will help you get on the right path.
Step It Up To A Run
Feeling ambitious? Why not get your heart pumping and your blood flowing with a nice jog or flat-out run. It wouldn’t be surprising if your dog jumped at the opportunity, they love running more than we do because it’s simply in their nature. See if they can keep up – or if you can – with a bit of a faster pace next time you take them out for a stroll.
Make Visits To The Dog Park
If you’re lucky enough to have a dog park nearby then taking them there to interact with other dogs is a great way for them to get more exercise. The plus side of this is that you don’t have to spend so much one-on-one time with your dog, so if you have some reading, paperwork, or emails to catch up on then you can make the best use of your time to boot. Plus, you might even make some friends of your own.
Play Fetch Outside
If there’s no dog park nearby then a regular park can still be useful for getting your dog some much-needed exercise. Bring a tennis ball or a frisbee along and let them chase after it with all their heart’s desire. Fetch is kind of fun too, once you relax into the routine of it. Give it a shot (or in this case, a throw), you might enjoy it as much as your dog.
Install an Electric Dog Fence
Let’s face it, you won’t always have time to give your dog constant attention, and there’s absolutely no shame in that. You can make up for this by letting them run around on their own in your yard, and if you use an electric dog fence you won’t have to worry about keeping an eye on them the whole time. Luckily, they aren’t that expensive either, and with the new wireless models you can have a boundary up and running in no time.
Don’t Forget – They Need To Eat Healthy Too
Just about every health nut out there will tell you that reducing body fat starts in the kitchen, no the gym. Why would it be any different for your dog? If you have a habit of feeding them table scraps or overfilling their dog bowl generously, the odds are you’re doing them more harm then good. Stick to the recommended diet of foot and treats and make sure they’re getting plenty of water. It will go a long way.
